OLDER ADULTS

Cruising with a Friend

I first met Josephine (Josie) on our International Cooking Class on Fridays at BBNC.  We had a lot in common and quickly became friends.  When I mentioned to her that I was planning to go on a cruise, she said that she had never been on one and would also love to go.  We booked a Western Caribbean Cruise with Royal Caribbean which was from Dec. 1- Dec. 8 last.  Since we had to board the ship from Miami, we left Toronto a day earlier.  Our itinerary included visiting Cozumel, Roatan, Costa Maya and Bahamas before coming back to Miami.  It was a wonderful trip and we had a great time discovering this huge ship and all its amenities.  Josie is very easy going and a great companion to travel with.  So, we’ll be planning many more trips together.

Walking club

BBNC is Walking Seniors to a Better Life!

I have been a participant with the Birchmount Bluffs Neighbourhood Centre (BBNC) Walking Club for Seniors since September 2022.  It was the first time since the beginning of Covid that I ventured out with a group of people.  It was so good to be out in the “world” again!  I joined the Monday morning and Tuesday afternoon groups led by Priya Hawkins, Seniors Active Living Program Facilitator.

The walking groups were the right mix of social time and exercise.  The atmosphere was laid back, friendly and the participants mixed very well together, which is a result of our leader Priya.  Priya made a point at each walking session to chat with each participant getting to know them and getting updates as the months went on.

The Monday morning walking sessions were held at different trails in the east end of Toronto, such as Colonel Danforth Park, Thompson Memorial Park, Taylor Creek Park, Morningside Park, Bluffers Park.  On these walks we get our much needed exercise while experiencing the pleasure of in person chats and the illusion of being in the country with nature, while never leaving the City.  Toronto has a remarkable amount of trails that are well kept and a pleasure to explore in both summer and winter, as weather and safety permits.

The Tuesday afternoon walks are primarily to Rosetta McClain Gardens. A beautiful garden close to the Birchmount Community Centre overlooking Lake Ontario and the Scarborough Bluffs. Or a walk on the Boardwalk at Woodbine Beach and explore the neighbourhood streets in the Beaches.

On these walks, Priya always seized the opportunity to experience new things. For example, on a walk at Rosetta McClain Gardens, we came across a group of volunteers with the Monarch Watch Tagging Program affiliated with the University of Kansas. These volunteers were involved in the tag recoveries and observations of migrating Monarchs.

On another walk we came across the City of Toronto Clark Centre for the Arts while on a walk at Guildwood Park and Gardens. We had an impromptu chat with one of the Artists Thomas Brasch and had a tour of the studio. On other occasions, we may end the walking session at a neighbourhood coffee shop!

These walks take place in all seasons. When it’s safe to do so, one gets to experience and appreciate outdoors in all types of weather, especially because we live in a climate with all types of weather!

Sewing Generosity: Older Adults Craft Pinafores for a Heartwarming Donation Drive

In a heartwarming display of community spirit and generosity, the Older Adult Social Club has embarked on a unique initiative to contribute to the Share365 Program. This volunteer-driven project involves crafting beautiful pinafore dresses to be donated to children in need ages 5 to 12 years of age. As the members of the club thread needles and stitch fabrics, they are not just creating garments; they are weaving connections, bridging generations, and leaving an indelible mark on the community.
The Share365 Program, renowned for its commitment to community welfare, is the catalyst behind this philanthropic endeavor. The program aims to provide support and resources to those in need throughout the entire year. By collaborating with various groups and organizations, Share365 ensures a sustained and impactful contribution to the betterment of society.
The Older Adult Social Club, known for its vibrant community engagement, decided to channel its collective skills and passion for crafting into a project that could make a significant difference. Inspired by the Share365 Program’s dedication to continuous giving, the club chose to focus its efforts on creating handmade pinafore dresses for young girls.
The decision to craft handmade pinafore dresses adds a personal touch to the donation drive. Each stitch represents the care and thoughtfulness of the volunteers, making the dresses not just pieces of clothing but tokens of love. The project allows the older adults to showcase their creativity, skills, and dedication to the community.
Beyond the tangible outcome of the pinafore dresses, the project fosters meaningful connections between generations. As older adults engage in conversations while crafting, they share stories, experiences, and wisdom with younger members who join in the effort. This inter-generational exchange is a testament to the social club’s commitment to building a strong, supportive community.
For many older adults, participating in the creation of these dresses goes beyond a charitable act; it provides them with a renewed sense of purpose. The project allows them to contribute actively to the well-being of others and reinforces the idea that age should never be a barrier to making a positive impact in the community. A heartfelt expression of gratitude extends to Poncey, the exceptional head of sewing pinafores, and to all the Older Adults whose dedication has been the cornerstone of this project.
As the pinafore dresses near completion, the Older Adult Social Club eagerly anticipates the moment when they can present their handmade creations to the Share365 Program. The dresses, carefully crafted and filled with goodwill, will become part of a larger effort to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. The Older Adults had to stop their usual routine during their sessions and dedicated more time from October to November to make such beautiful dresses.
The Older Adult Social Club’s decision to volunteer their time and talents for the Share365 Program’s pinafore dress donation drive exemplifies the transformative power of community engagement. Through their creative endeavors, these older adults are not just crafting dresses; they are weaving a tapestry of compassion, connection, and care that enriches the entire community. As the pinafore dresses find new homes, they carry with them the spirit of the Older Adult Social Club, proving that a small act of kindness can have a profound and lasting impact

Youthful Sweetness: A Warm Thank You to the Baking Enthusiasts of Our High Tea Event

In a world that whirls with ceaseless motion, there’s a certain solace found in the enduring traditions that bind us together. Our community recently savored one such enchanting moment, crafted with generosity and ingenuity by the vibrant youth in our midst. Their dedication to baking and presenting an array of exquisite cookies for our high tea event deserves more than just recognition; it warrants a heartfelt celebration.
The energy and enthusiasm brought by the youth to our high tea were truly contagious. From the moment they took on the initiative to bake cookies, it was evident that their passion for the culinary arts was not just about the final product but also about the joy of creating something special for others to enjoy.
Beyond the delicious treats, the gesture itself spoke volumes about the character of our
youth. In a world often dominated by technology and fast-paced living, taking the time to bake from scratch and share homemade goodies is a nod to the enduring values of community, generosity, and the simple joy of creating something with one’s hands.
The aroma of freshly baked cookies wafted through the air, creating an atmosphere of warmth and comfort. The sight of beautifully arranged platters and the sound of joyous conversations intermingled with the clinking of teacups made the event a feast for the senses. It was a testament to the fact that, in the midst of our busy lives, we can still find time to savor the finer things that connect us all.
The intergenerational aspect of this initiative was particularly heartening. The youth not only brought a fresh perspective to the table but also bridged the gap between generations. Through the language of cookies, they communicated a message of unity and shared enjoyment, proving that a simple act of baking can transcend age and background.
To the talented young bakers who graced our high tea with their culinary skills and infectious enthusiasm, we extend our deepest gratitude. Your cookies not only satisfied our taste buds but also warmed our hearts. Your efforts remind us all of the power of community and the importance of passing on traditions, skills, and the joy of giving.
In the sweet symphony of flavors and the shared moments of laughter and connection, the youth have left an indelible mark on our high tea event. Their commitment to crafting delicious cookies and sharing them with the community exemplifies the best of what our younger generation has to offer. As we savor the last crumbs of these delightful treats, we also savor the memories of an event made truly special by the thoughtful contributions of our local youth. Thank you for sweetening our high tea and reminding us all of the beauty that unfolds when different generations come together to celebrate the simple pleasures of life.

Happiness is found in Gratitude

At BBNC we have our Older Adults 60+(Outstanding Adults) Social Club every Wednesday from 1pm to 3pm in the Lion’s Den. Our Sewing instructor Laara came up with the idea of make dresses for girls ages 5 to 12 to donate to the centre. After talking to the Share365 program coordinator Kathy, we decided that it would be a good project for the community as a whole. We started the sewing club in the Spring of 2023, we didn’t have much for inventory and would cost a fortune to get the two existing sewing machines repaired. I had voiced my concern to the class and we were disheartened that this may not happen.

Laara, sent me an email recently stating that she has a BIG surprise for me, informing that she can make our wish come true. Laara has advocated on behalf of BBNC saying that we needed supplies for the Sewing program. She got me in touch with The FontBonne Ministries “Mustard Seed” program was donating everything that was pertaining to sewing including 2 excellent condition sewing machines to BBNC.
We are very grateful to Laara and The FontBonne Ministries -Mustard Seed program for their generosity and big hearts. The participants of the Social Club at BBNC were thrilled that we got such a BIG donation and are using the supplies towards the project.
